Answers for frequently asked questions about Hudiy project
What is Hudiy used for?
If you want to build your own head unit tailored to your needs, or create a proof of concept — Hudiy is the perfect choice.
Hudiy provides a complete software platform with all the functionalities that modern infotainment solutions should have, and you can extend it even further using the API and HTML/JavaScript.
The biggest advantage of Hudiy is its flexibility. It is designed to run smoothly on Raspberry Pi 4B and 5, which means there is plenty of hardware available that you can use for your project — starting from displays and ending with gesture controllers to operate the interface and control other functions.
Who is the maintainer of Hudiy?
The author and maintainer of the Hudiy project is Wiboma Sp. z o. o. We are a company specializing in the development of software solutions, especially for embedded devices.
What kind of knowledge is required to use Hudiy?
Hudiy is software that runs on top of a Linux operating system. This requires basic knowledge and experience in using and configuring Linux (preferably Debian-based distributions).
Hudiy runs primarily on Raspberry Pi hardware, so having some basic experience with it is recommended.
To extend Hudiy’s functionality, it is also helpful to have basic knowledge of HTML and JavaScript to create your own widgets, overlays, or applications.
How does Hudiy work?
In a nutshell, Hudiy is a UI application that runs on top of the Linux operating system.
Hudiy utilizes several Linux subsystems, such as BlueZ for Bluetooth, PipeWire for audio, and Wayland/X11/GStreamer for rendering the user interface.
The target distribution is Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm.
What hardware platforms are supported by Hudiy?
At the moment, Hudiy supports Raspberry Pi 4B and 5, but support for other platforms is planned for the future.
What is required to run Hudiy?
The mandatory hardware is a Raspberry Pi 4B or 5 with at least 2GB of RAM running Raspberry Pi OS Desktop 64 bit (Bookworm). You also need a display with a resolution up to 1920×1080, and at least 8GB of free storage space.
Other hardware depends on your needs, but each component must be supported by the Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi OS Desktop 64 bit (Bookworm).
Is Hudiy open source?
Hudiy’s core is proprietary software that requires purchasing a license in our shop. Other extensions, such as widgets, overlays, or applications that can be used with Hudiy, may be licensed separately.
Open-source extensions developed by us will also be available on our GitHub.
How can I get Hudiy?
The only legal way to obtain Hudiy is by purchasing a license in our shop. The license gives you access to download the Hudiy installer and use the installed copy.
What do I receive after purchasing the license?
After purchasing the license, you will receive an installer that enables you to download and run Hudiy on your Raspberry Pi. Please note that Raspberry Pi OS Desktop 64-bit (Bookworm) must be installed on the device beforehand. Hudiy is not provided as a full system image — the installer will automatically install all dependencies and configure the necessary subsystems.
Examples of OBD-II widgets visible in the screenshots must be installed separately from our GitHub repository.
I have to replace the hardware. Do I need to purchase a new license for Hudiy?
No, the Hudiy license is not tied to any particular hardware. However, you may only run one active instance per license at any given time.
Is the hardware I want to use supported by Hudiy?
Hudiy does not interact with hardware directly. It relies on subsystems delivered with the Operating System. If the hardware you intend to use is supported by these subsystems, it will be compatible with Hudiy as well.
To avoid potential issues, we strongly recommend testing all planned hardware with Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm before purchasing a Hudiy license.
How can I update Hudiy?
Hudiy includes an embedded updater accessible via command line. Whenever a new update is released, it will be announced on our website. You can then use the updater to download and install the latest version.
All updates within the same Raspberry Pi OS baseline are provided free of charge. Updates that involve porting Hudiy to a new Raspberry Pi OS baseline may be subject to additional charges.
Does Hudiy collect any data from users?
No, Hudiy does not collect any data except for license validation. It does not include any telemetry or other tracking mechanisms.
Do I need an active internet connection on the Raspberry Pi to use Hudiy?
No, an internet connection is only required during the installation and update processes. Once installed, Hudiy works fully offline.
